Fall Break for the Geezers - October 29 (Paris!)
We are starting off our day with an art exhibit like none ever seen before!
At the Atelier des Lumineres - Paris's first digital art museum - we entered a warehouse
for an exhibit of the work of artist Gustav Klimt. Multiple masterpieces are projected onto the walls, floors and other surfaces. Anne and Jed had visited Paris this summer and they highly recommended this venue. It was fantastique!!!
There were actually three different series of artwork presented, but the Klimt work was the main emphasis. While the images were shown, classical music was played. Sight and sound together meant the senses were well served!
The third "show" was all techno and in black and white.
By now it was lunchtime, and we were hungry and in search of a casual, quick bite to eat.
This pizza and panini place looked about right, so we headed in and found a seat. We were following all the French rules with saying Bonjour as we entered, Merci when we were seated.
But when it came time to order ONE pizza for the TWO of us to share things got uncomfortable.
Our waiter made sure we knew he was most displeased with us.
See that family to the side of us? They heard the whole conversation and when the waiter left,
they asked, "Ready for another pizza now?" We had heard them talking earlier and knew they were Swedish...and we had the best conversation with them. They were from Goteborg and were visiting their daughter in her study-abroad program in Paris. Small world!
The pizza was actually very good.
After lunch we met near the Moulin Rouge for another Discovery Walk tour of the Montmartre area.
Our guide was great! He reminded me of the actor Eddie Redmayne. Once again, the pink vest identifies our leader readily. Not long into our walk we saw the cafe and grocery store where the movie Amelie took place.
This is one charming neighborhood. One can see why Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse, Toulouse-Lautrec, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Picasso came here to paint and create.
Artists are still very much a part of the neighborhood today:
| The Wall of Love in Montmartre features the phrase I LOVE YOU in 250 languages. |
Our tour ended up at the Basilica du Sacre-Coeur on the top of the hill.
Great view from the top!
We ended up walking only 6.9 miles today. Our "reward" was going back to the Amelia cafe to
have her favorite treat: creme brulee with coffee/hot cocoa.
Just what was needed after a very good, very full day of Parisian experiences!
