Lovely Lund

Lovely Lund has it all: history (founded by King Sven Tveskagg more than 1000 years ago),
a university that is currently #2 in size (Sweden) with 47,000 students, and an open-air museum
(Kulturen) that has preserved streets, cottages and town houses in the Medieval area of the city.
Oh, and a palace, too!  Come along on our walking tour of this city we explored last Sunday.

First destination:
Lund Domkyrka
Because it was Sunday morning, we were there in time for the 11:00 church service. We enjoyed the prelude, special music and hymn singing, but cut out once the sermon began.

Once again, Google Translate, to the rescue (almost!)

Next stop on foot: The Bishop's Palace Birthplace of Lund University in 1666.

Don't you just love the round turret with the crenels and merlons on top?

A hop, skip and a jump from here is the "White House" of Lund University completed in 1882.
The school motto is "Prepared for Both"...both what?

Time to move along to the third stop:

Kulturen. Here we'd spend the next few hours and still not see everything.
This is the open air museum of  Georg Karlin's dreams - a rescuer of objects and buildings
from the medieval period in Lund. He started "collecting" in the 1890's and the museum and its
30-some buildings opened in 1892.

Keep in mind that these building were open to explore more historical collections and furnishing inside...it was mind-boggling to see it all. Funny that I liked the interiors of the simple Swedish dwellings the most:

Kirsten Larson (American Girl doll) fans agree?

I can just see her living in this dwelling.

Packing up this trunk and boarding a boat to come to America and eventually settling in Minnesota.

But, I digress and that's okay.
Our walking tour has come to an end.
Our time at the parking garage has expired and we have one more stop before heading home.
That stop deserves its own blog entry!
