The First Week of Classes

The first week of classes is now one for the books here at SVF!  It was so exciting to have the American students arrive on Sunday night, August 19.  Many of them hadn't slept much more than a few winks since their departures from the US...and still they impressed me with their flexibility in
dealing with the unexpected plane connection delays, cumbersome luggage and lack of sleep.

I'm going to now break the week down by what happened on each day of the week. (I told the group I was going to be writing a blog about our experiences, and they approved of their pictures being shown here.)

Sunday, August 19

A meal.  Dorm assignments. Games in the gym.

Monday, August 20

The student body gathers in the auditorium to hear (via headphones and a great translator!) a welcome address by President Anders Georgsson and meet various staff members.  The music presnted was fabulous and even included a Stevie Wonder song Love's in Need of Love Today.

The American and Swedes meet in a classroom for introductions.
They later have an outing walk off campus.
The American professor with the group.
Equal time for the Swedish professor, Marianne Kvist, with the group and more of the background of the beautiful city of Jonkoping.

Tuesday, August 21

After another morning gathering in the auditorium it's time for kanelbullar fika! MMM!

Wes and Marianne

Classroom time.  The teachers.

Afternoon walking tour to get acquainted with the city.

Wednesday, August 22

They have classes.  I don't. Instead, I'm getting ready to have the whole American group over to our apartment this evening and serving the lingon cake I baked.  Oh, and Delicatoball, too.
We found out we have a bunch of joke tellers in our midst...

"I've been reading a book about anti gravity,
I had a hard time putting it down."

Thursday, August 23
Wes teaches two classes:
  INTRO TO THE USA
  CATALYST EUROPE

Friday, August 24

The MUSIC LINE sings at the first chapel service.  So good!

           Guess what? Another fika!
This time the staff and faculty meet without students.
That's Gustav - the IT guy - next to me and the President behind me.

Week One: Completed.
We feel so fortunate to be here!
