Norway Bound: Part 4

After a good night of rest, we are ready to explore Oslo one more time before catching a bus back to Jonkoping later this afternoon.  We needed serious food fortification and our hotel provided a great
complimentary breakfast included in our lodging package. It was delicious!

Armed - once again with rain jackets, umbrellas and rain ponchos - we set out to the National Gallery to see famous works of art including The Scream by Edvard Munch.

It appeared that much of the population of Oslo had the same idea. The line into the museum wrapped around the block...we waited over an hour to enter the museum. Most of the visitors headed up the staircase to see the Munch.  We didn't go with the flow; instead we went to the special exhibit of Norwegian artist, Gerhard Munthe.
 (b. 1849 d.1929)

Closeup of the Princess with her pup.  Guessing they are perhaps not impressed by the Prince?

Not only was Munthe a painter, he also designed furniture.  His work reminded me of Swedish artist, Carl Larsson. (b. 1853 d.1919)

From here we went upstairs to see the many galleries of art.  It was a challenge to get to the one with the Edvard Munch works due to the many people at the museum this rainy day.

And...drum roll...here it is:

Like I said, it was very crowded in front of this piece!
In all fairness, we did get an unobstructed view of The Scream, but I thought this captured
our experience in a nutshell.

Next, we planned to walk over to City Hall, and on the way we met up with a marching band.
They joined another marching band WHO HAPPENED TO BE SINGING as they marched.
It felt like some sort of National Holiday thing, but we never found out what was going on even though the crowd followed the bands somewhere close to the waterfront.

Once at the Oslo City Hall, we took a tour (in English!) to see all the painted murals.

I had to take a picture of all the picture-takers there, of course.

By this time, we were spent.  Norway had been a wonderful place to visit, but it was time to get back to our new home in Jonkoping, Sweden. Several hours on the bus later, and we were there!

We need to get ready for our first visitors!

  1. As much herring as there is on a Scandinavian breakfast buffet, there is never enough herring.
